GRIT TO GREATNESS
Grit to Greatness captures a defining moment in barrel racing—a sport where precision, speed, and sheer determination collide in a split second that can separate defeat from triumph. With a face-forward view, I aimed to lock in on that pivotal instant: the rider leaning in, calculating every move, the horse exploding with energy, dust flying in a blur of motion. It’s not just a race—it's a test of will, grit, and the relentless pursuit of excellence.
This painting is rooted in my lifelong connection to the Calgary Stampede. From working my first job in the Grandstand to witnessing the power and grace of barrel racers day after day, I’ve seen firsthand how women in this sport embody strength, skill, and courage. Barrel racing—like the Stampede itself—is fueled by the unshakable bond between tradition and transformation. It’s a sport of grit, but also one of greatness: a moment where every ounce of training, instinct, and heart is put to the test.
The Calgary Stampede, from its grassroots origins to its rise as a world-renowned cultural celebration, mirrors this same journey—from raw grit to hard-earned greatness. My use of expressive strokes and splattered paint symbolizes both the literal dirt and energy of the arena, and the metaphorical grind that defines any path to mastery.
This work is not just about the sport—it’s about the spirit that drives it: resilience, courage, and the power to rise, turn after turn, challenge after challenge. Grit to Greatness is a tribute to the riders, the horses, and to the enduring legacy of the Calgary Stampede—a place where Western heritage meets modern determination, and where greatness is earned in every heartbeat of the ride.
Here’s a glimpse into the raw and gritty beginnings of my painting and how it all came to life. From the start, I knew I wanted to capture something bursting with energy and motion. I began by sketching out small, dynamic concepts—each one building toward what would ultimately become the 2025 Calgary Stampede Poster!
One of the most exciting parts of having my artwork featured on such a timeless and iconic poster is seeing how it's being brought to life in so many creative ways—from t-shirts and vehicle wraps to, my personal favourite, the legendary Stampede poster buckle.
